ZRP Confirms 13 Deaths in Harare–Nyamapanda, Harare–Mutare Crashes
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have confirmed that 13 people were killed in two separate road traffic accidents that occurred on Wednesday along the Harare–Nyamapanda and Harare–Mutare.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the deadliest crash happened at the 185-kilometre peg near Suswe Area on the Harare–Nyamapanda Road between 11:30am and noon. The accident involved a Honda Fit pirate taxi and a haulage truck.
According to police, the Honda Fit, which was travelling from Mutoko to Kotwa carrying 10 occupants, collided head-on with a haulage truck heading towards Harare. All 10 passengers in the Honda Fit died at the scene.
Commissioner Nyathi said the truck had four occupants, none of whom were killed. Preliminary investigations indicate that the Honda Fit veered into the oncoming lane leading to the fatal collision.
In a separate accident on the Harare–Mutare Road in Ruwa, a commuter omnibus reportedly burst a tyre, lost control, overturned and landed on its left side.
The Ruwa crash claimed the lives of three people, while 15 others were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
