Nakamba Faces Backlash After Costly Error Ends Warriors’ AFCON Campaign

Warriors captain Marvellous Nakamba has come under heavy criticism following Zimbabwe’s 3–2 defeat to South Africa at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a result that ended the country’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.

The midfielder conceded a late penalty through a handball, a moment that proved decisive as South Africa secured victory. Zimbabwe required at least a draw to keep their qualification chances alive but finished the group stage with one point from three matches, exiting the tournament at the first hurdle.

The loss marked the Warriors’ seventh appearance at AFCON, with expectations of improvement failing to materialise.

Speaking after the match, Nakamba accepted responsibility for the incident and issued a public apology to the nation and his teammates.

“I am sorry to my country, my teammates and everyone in Zimbabwe. We lose as a team, and we will learn from this. It’s part of life,” he said.

However, the apology did little to calm sections of the fan base, with some supporters expressing dissatisfaction, arguing that the captain appeared to understate the magnitude of the error that effectively ended Zimbabwe’s campaign.

The incident has sparked renewed debate among fans over leadership, accountability and the Warriors’ continued struggles on the continental stage.
