Presidential Rivers Rehabilitation Kicks Off in Mazowe
Itai Mazire
The National Presidential Rivers Rehabilitation Programme has begun full-scale operations in Mazowe District, marking the first phase of a nationwide push to restore rivers damaged by illegal mining and streambank cultivation.
In the pilot project at the Murodzi River, Prevail International Group is carrying out desilting works aimed at clearing years of sediment build-up and re-establishing natural water flows.
The initiative, led by Presidential Advisor Dr Paul Tungwarara, is designed to revive degraded ecosystems, boost water availability, and strengthen agricultural activity in affected communities.
Authorities say the programme will also create jobs as teams move to address extensive environmental damage caused by unregulated alluvial mining.
The river rehabilitation drive complements other Presidential interventions such as the Borehole Drilling Scheme and the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme, all aimed at improving rural livelihoods and strengthening key infrastructure.
Prevail International Group officials said more rivers in the district are set to undergo similar restoration as the programme scales up in the coming months.
