Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has reportedly been taken into custody in New York after being apprehended during a United States military operation in Venezuela, according to reports circulating in the American media.

Sources say Maduro was transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, arriving at the facility at approximately 8:52pm Eastern Time on Saturday. Officials indicated that he is scheduled to appear before a federal court in Manhattan on Monday for an initial hearing.

MDC Brooklyn is a highly secure federal detention facility known for housing prominent detainees. Among those previously held there is music executive Sean “Diddy”, who was remanded at the center during court proceedings before later receiving a federal sentence related to prostitution offences.

The facility has also held Sam Bankman-Fried, the former chief executive of collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, who was convicted on multiple fraud-related charges.

In addition, Luigi Mangione, who is facing charges in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, is currently being detained at the same institution.
