NDS2 Delivers: Mabvuku Traffic Interchange Nears Key Milestones
Infrastructure expansion continues to anchor the National Development Strategy Two (NDS2), with flagship projects such as the Mabvuku Traffic Interchange advancing steadily and reflecting the Second Republic’s drive to upgrade Zimbabwe’s transport systems.
Construction activity at the interchange has gathered fresh pace in the new year on one of Harare’s most heavily used transport corridors, where work is progressing under the broader NDS2 infrastructure programme.
The project has now reached the piling phase, an essential stage involving the drilling and casting of deep foundation pillars designed to carry the weight of the interchange structure.
Officials managing the development confirm that over 20 piles, each extending to an average depth of eight metres, have already been completed. The total number of piles required stands at 48, with the current target set for completion by mid-year.
As work continues, road users are being advised to exercise caution as traffic lanes remain restricted around the construction zone. While the temporary disruptions have inconvenienced some motorists, many commuters say the long-term gains will outweigh the short-term challenges.
“This project is long overdue and will significantly reduce congestion,” said one driver.
Another commuter noted that the interchange would usher in modern road infrastructure for the area, while others have called for similar developments across the country.
Government has reaffirmed that its infrastructure development agenda remains firmly on track, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa emphasising the importance of unity, local participation and effective use of national resources in driving development.
“I urge all Zimbabweans, including our development partners, to support this transformative National Development Strategy Two,” said President Mnangagwa. “Through unity, focus and determination, we can fast-track development and exceed our national targets.”
The President further highlighted that harnessing local skills, youth innovation, domestic resources and the contributions of the diaspora will play a crucial role in achieving the country’s development ambitions.
Although the construction timeline may require patience from daily commuters, authorities say the progress made so far signals a major step towards improving mobility in Harare, easing traffic congestion, enhancing road safety and permanently resolving long-standing transport bottlenecks.
