South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) has urged immediate discussions with the Zimbabwean government following the interception of a group of undocumented Zimbabwean minors at the Beitbridge border post.

On Tuesday, BMA officials stopped 33 children, aged between four and 15, who were attempting to cross from South Africa into Zimbabwe without proper documentation. The children were intercepted at the Beitbridge Port of Entry during routine border operations.

Authorities also arrested two Zimbabwean nationals suspected of organising and facilitating the illegal movement of the minors, in violation of South Africa’s Immigration Act.

According to BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi, the incident follows similar cases earlier this month, when border officials intercepted 20 children and 10 adults near the Limpopo River while attempting to cross the border unlawfully.

Mogotsi described the situation as deeply concerning, stressing that it highlights a growing problem that requires urgent bilateral engagement.

“This is a serious situation that demands immediate attention. There is a need for structured dialogue with the Zimbabwean authorities to address the recurring issue of undocumented children crossing the border,” she said.

Initial investigations suggest the children had entered South Africa during the festive season and were now returning home. However, Mogotsi emphasised that the informal and unsafe manner in which these crossings are taking place poses significant risks to the children involved.
