Zimbabwe Embarks on Ambitious Digital Transformation Drive

The Government of Zimbabwe has unveiled ambitious plans to establish a state-of-the-art national data centre and an industrial technology park, a move that marks a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation agenda.

The initiative was discussed during a high-level meeting between the Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, and Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Chief Executive Officer, Mr Roy Chimanikire.

The project is expected to significantly enhance Zimbabwe’s digital infrastructure, strengthen artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, and position the country as a competitive player in the regional digital economy.

At the centre of the plan is the construction of a modern data centre designed to support energy-intensive computing. The facility will be backed by expanded power generation capacity, a critical requirement for advanced technologies such as AI, cloud computing, and big data analytics.

Government officials say this infrastructure will form the backbone of Zimbabwe’s digital economy and support innovation across multiple sectors.

Zimbabwe is also set to launch a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy this month, signaling a clear policy direction towards embracing emerging technologies. The strategy aims to drive transformation in key sectors including banking, finance, manufacturing, agriculture, and production, while improving efficiency, service delivery, and competitiveness.

In line with this vision, the government has introduced measures to reduce the cost of doing business in the ICT sector. These reforms are expected to lower the cost of data and voice services, making digital access more affordable for businesses and citizens, and accelerating digital inclusion nationwide.

Minister Mavetera подчеркed that robust digital infrastructure is essential for economic growth and industrialisation. She highlighted the government’s commitment to private-sector-led development, noting that partnerships with industry players such as Econet Wireless are crucial to the success of the initiative.

“If successful, this project could position Zimbabwe as a key player in the regional digital economy,” said Minister Mavetera. “Digital infrastructure is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity for economic growth, innovation, and global competitiveness.”

The proposed industrial technology park is expected to attract investment, nurture local tech startups, and create high-value jobs, while also enabling skills development in advanced digital technologies.

As Zimbabwe accelerates its digital transformation journey, the data centre and technology park project represents a bold step towards building a knowledge-based economy, enhancing technological sovereignty, and securing the country’s place in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
