Germany ranked fourth among Zimbabwe’s top international source markets in 2024, underlining its rising strategic importance to Destination Zimbabwe, as the country intensifies efforts to grow tourism arrivals, investment and global visibility.
Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon Barbara Rwodzi met German Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Christoph Retzlaff, where she outlined the tourism sector’s strong growth trajectory since 2021 and reaffirmed Government’s commitment to leveraging tourism as a driver of inclusive economic growth, image building, diplomacy and trade.
“Zimbabwe remains focused on aggressive destination marketing, deeper bilateral cooperation with Germany, and expanding access to key European markets,” said Minister Rwodzi.
She confirmed Zimbabwe’s participation at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) Berlin in March 2026, one of the world’s largest tourism trade fairs, where the country will showcase its diverse tourism products and unique cultural heritage.
“Many opportunities exist for enhanced collaboration between the two countries in tourism promotion, skills development, investment and knowledge exchange,” Minister stated.
She pointed to study tourism as an emerging area of cooperation, citing an upcoming academic exchange involving 16 students and four lecturers from Potsdam University, scheduled to visit Zimbabwe from 14 February to 10 March 2026.
Ambassador Retzlaff described Zimbabwe as a fascinating destination with immense tourism potential and a strong global reputation.
He cited Zimbabwe’s recognition by Forbes Magazine as the World’s Number One Must-Visit Destination in 2025 as evidence of the country’s growing international appeal.
He also commended improving air connectivity, including direct Eurowings flights, and welcomed continued market exploration and promotional initiatives targeting the German market.
The engagement reflects Zimbabwe’s broader strategy to diversify source markets, strengthen Europe-focused tourism partnerships, and position tourism as a cornerstone of economic recovery, international engagement and sustainable development.
