Acting President Hon Colonel (Retd) Dr Kembo Mohadi has presided over a high-level resource mobilisation ceremony aimed at assisting Mozambique following torrential rains that caused widespread devastation in four provinces, leaving many families displaced and in urgent need of humanitarian support.
As part of its assistance, Zimbabwe donated grain and other essential supplies to affected Mozambican communities. The relief package includes sugar, cooking oil, mealie meal, tinned foods, grain, blankets, and medical equipment, accessories and consumables.
In addition, Zimbabwe has deployed rescue teams, supported by two helicopters, to bolster search-and-rescue and relief operations on the ground.
Dr Mohadi expressed heart-felt sympathy to the victims of the floods, noting that such disasters are not isolated occurrences. He underscored the need for strengthened preparedness, resilience and collective action to mitigate the impact of climate-related emergencies across the region.
“Guided by Zimbabwe’s values of solidarity, neighbourliness and African unity, His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa authorised the deployment of air rescue helicopters to support Mozambique’s emergency response.
Zimbabwe and Mozambique are more than neighbours, sharing borders, intertwined cultures, rivers, ecosystems and a common history forged during the liberation struggle. It is only natural that in moments of adversity, we stand together as one family,” he said.
The Acting President commended the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) for its coordination and leadership in disaster response efforts and expressed sincere appreciation to all stakeholders and development partners for their generous contributions.
Dr Mohadi concluded by extending Zimbabwe’s solidarity to the Government and people of the Republic of Mozambique, conveying a message of hope, friendship and unwavering support to all those affected by the floods.
