…Female soldiers, spouses turn barracks into breadbasket, champion food security

In a striking display of diversification and grassroots innovation, female soldiers and military spouses at Manyame Airbase are being hailed as national models for agrarian entrepreneurship, successfully running high-yield farming projects that are boosting both incomes and local food security.

Mr. Leonard Munamati, the Director of Rural Development, during a recent visit, singled out the group’s mushroom farming project as a “game-changer,” praising its high-profit, low-cost model.

He commended the women for transforming limited space into serious revenue streams and strengthening community resilience.

“This is a brilliant example of clever, sustainable enterprise,” stated Munamati.

“These women are not just participating, they are leading and demonstrating how to turn small spaces into significant income. This is the essence of rural development.”

The women, operating in cooperatives that also include civilians from the surrounding community, manage a portfolio of ventures.

These include mushroom cultivation —highlighted for its quick returns and minimal startup costs, as well as livestock rearing of goats, pigs, and indigenous poultry.

The initiative shatters stereotypes, showing military personnel and their families actively engaged in peacetime economic development. The projects provide supplementary income, enhance household nutrition, and supply local markets.

To scale their success, Munamati urged the groups to formalize partnerships with the government through the Village Business Units (VBUs) program. This, he said, would provide greater access to resources, training, and markets, further cementing their role in national food security efforts.

The scene at Manyame Airbase is now one of dual service: to the nation in uniform, and to the community through agriculture, embodying a drive towards comprehensive national resilience.
