The once-modest rural business centre of Maphisa is undergoing a radical metamorphosis into a modern regional hub, as massive road rehabilitation and upgrading projects take center stage ahead of the 2026 National Independence Day celebrations.

Recently elevated to Town Board status, Maphisa is witnessing a surge in infrastructure development driven by mining, agriculture and significant investment from the diaspora community.

The construction of access roads is currently in full swing, linking vital shops, markets, government offices and residential areas.

These arteries are considered the lifeblood of local commerce and daily life in the newly minted town.

The acceleration of these works is part of the “Independence Legacy Projects,” as Maphisa-formerly known as Antelope Mine-prepares to make history by hosting the national festivities for the first time.

Director of Roads, Engineer Jarawani Kangara, provided a detailed technical update on the ongoing works, emphasizing the high standards being applied to the project.

“Surface preparation, including crack sealing and pothole patching, is currently in progress on the Bulawayo-Kezi-Maphisa Road. Following this, we will apply Asphalt Concrete (AC).”

The engineering team is currently reclaiming the old strip road and reinforcing the foundation with three distinct base layers to ensure durability against heavy traffic.

Eng. Kangara further explained the final stages of the project,”The final application of Asphalt Concrete (AC), specifically a 35mm asphalt overlay, will provide the smooth, durable finish that has been missing for decades.”

The infrastructure surge is not merely for the upcoming celebrations but serves as a cornerstone of the Second Republic’s restorative development agenda under Vision 2030.

As part of the preparations, a new stadium at the Maphisa Open Grounds is also under construction to accommodate the historic 2026 Independence Day event, signaling a new era of autonomy and growth for the Matobo District.
