Transport and Infrastructural Development Deputy Minister, Hon. J.K. Sacco, has called on the media to fully embrace its critical role in shaping public attitudes toward road safety, describing journalism as a calling with the power to save lives.

Speaking as Guest of Honour at the 10th edition of the Road Safety Journalistic Awards held in Harare yesterday, Hon. Sacco commended journalists for their continued efforts in promoting safe driving and responsible road use.

In his keynote address, the Deputy Minister urged media practitioners to strengthen their partnership with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe in spreading awareness on road safety. He said this collaboration is especially important within the framework of the Global Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, which aims to halve road traffic deaths by the end of the decade.

Hon. Sacco also highlighted government initiatives being implemented under the Second Republic’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1). He noted that significant progress has been made in the rehabilitation and construction of roads across all provinces, contributing to improved safety standards nationwide.

On post-crash response measures, the Deputy Minister revealed that nationwide consultations on the proposed Road Accident Fund Bill have been successfully completed, marking a key milestone toward strengthening support systems for road accident victims.

The awards ceremony was hosted by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, with parastatals under the Ministry’s portfolio represented by their respective boards and management.
