Ten schools from Bulawayo recently took part in the World Robotics Olympiad (WRO), displaying creative robotics projects aimed at solving some of Zimbabwe’s key development challenges. The competition was held under the theme “Robotics Meets Culture,” encouraging learners to blend technology with local context.

Participants were tasked with designing robotic solutions relevant to sectors such as agriculture, business, community development, information and communication technology, education, and finance. The event provided a platform for learners to apply practical skills to real-life problems affecting their communities.

Addressing attendees, the Chief Director of Provincial Education Services said Zimbabwe’s heritage-based education system is rooted in national identity and supports the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which prioritises youth empowerment through entrepreneurship and ICT skills. He noted that robotics education is expanding across the country and is becoming more inclusive, equipping learners with hands-on skills to respond to local needs.

Learners presented a range of impressive projects, including robotic solutions for firefighting and soil moisture monitoring, highlighting both creativity and technical competence.

National WRO Coordinator Victoria Nxumalo said the competition aims to increase the participation of the girl child in science and technology while strengthening skills development among school pupils, who are the future leaders of the country.

The event was officially opened by the Guest of Honour, D. Phuthi, Deputy Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services. He said the Ministry seeks to build an enabling environment where young people can discover their talents and contribute towards a digitally driven Zimbabwe. He also praised the organisers for hosting an event that aligns with Government development goals.

At the awards ceremony, Lone Scientist Primary School won first place in the Elementary Category, Masiyaphambili Junior School topped the Junior Category, while Agape College emerged winners in the Senior Category. Agape College was also crowned overall provincial champions for Bulawayo.
