The Government’s Presidential Hospital Refurbishment Programme has officially commenced at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, marking a major step forward in the modernisation of the nation’s public healthcare infrastructure.

The multi-stage project, designed to overhaul ageing facilities and introduce cutting-edge medical departments, is being implemented in three distinct phases. Construction teams have already begun work on Phase One, which is focusing on the prominent three-storey building that previously housed family support services.

Upon completion of the first phase, the building will be converted into a high-tech medical hub. Key features of the upgraded facility will include a fully fledged Eye Unit and a dedicated surgical theatre, as well as specialised maternal care facilities. These will include a modern Fetal Monitoring Unit and a specialised Kangaroo Unit, designed to support nursing mothers and promote skin-to-skin care for premature infants.

“This is about more than just a fresh coat of paint,” a Ministry of Health public relations official said. “We are integrating family support services and critical Project Management Units (PMUs) directly into the hospital’s structural flow to ensure patient-centred care.”

In addition to visible structural upgrades, the refurbishment programme is addressing long-standing utility challenges. Plans include a complete overhaul of the hospital’s water reticulation system, with the broader infrastructure improvements aimed at providing a lasting solution to supply problems and ensuring uninterrupted delivery of quality healthcare.

The initiative falls under the broader Health for All mandate, which seeks to bring Zimbabwe’s central hospitals up to international standards through strategic and phased investment.
