The High Court has issued an order for the attachment of property belonging to prominent lawyer and opposition politician Fadzayi Mahere to recover a judgment debt of US$33,000.

The court’s directive follows a successful defamation lawsuit brought against Mahere by the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Tinoda Machakaire.

The legal dispute arose from a social media post authored by Mahere in July 2025. In the post, Mahere questioned the minister’s alleged involvement in an US$8 million tax evasion case concerning vehicle imports.

Minister Machakaire subsequently pursued legal action, arguing that the claims were defamatory, baseless, and intended to damage his reputation.

In his suit, Minister Machakaire maintained that he was neither a minister nor the accounting officer during the period in question and noted that he had been cleared of any wrongdoing by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee.

The minister demanded a public apology and a full retraction, asserting that the claims, which were widely circulated online, caused significant reputational harm.
