Minister Mhona Opens Upgraded Mama Mafuyana Drive in Harare
A newly rehabilitated 3,2-kilometre stretch of Mama Mafuyana Drive formerly known as Lorraine Drive has officially been opened to traffic, marking another step forward in Harare’s road rehabilitation and modernisation programme.
The development comes as authorities continue to assess several other roads across the capital that require urgent repairs and upgrades.
The road was officially opened by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona, together with the Minister of State for Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Senator Charles Tawengwa. The rehabilitation works were carried out by local contractor Fossil Contracting.
Upgrading Mama Mafuyana Drive forms part of wider infrastructure improvements currently taking place across Harare.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Minister Mhona said the completion of the project demonstrates the Government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure.
He explained that the road had previously deteriorated after being used as a diversion route for heavy traffic during the rehabilitation of other major roads linked to regional infrastructure works. According to the minister, the street was not designed to carry large trucks, which led to significant damage.
Mhona said the Government had assured residents that the contractor would return to fix the road, and the completed rehabilitation now reflects that commitment.
He added that the Government remains focused on delivering quality infrastructure under the leadership of Emmerson Mnangagwa, stressing that contractors are expected to meet high standards when carrying out public works.
