A young Nigerian woman, Elena Jessica, has died following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure she underwent at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Lagos, raising renewed concerns about the safety of cosmetic surgeries in the country.

According to friends and relatives, Jessica initially sought the procedure at another clinic but was reportedly turned away due to her light skin tone.

Determined to proceed, she later underwent the surgery at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.Friends allege that complications developed shortly after the operation, including a severe infection.

They claim that the clinic failed to provide adequate post-operative care, leaving Jessica without the medical support needed to manage the complications. Her condition reportedly worsened in the days following the surgery, eventually leading to her death.

The incident has drawn widespread attention on social media and among health professionals, particularly as it is alleged to be at least the third death linked to BBL procedures at the same clinic since 2022.

These claims have intensified calls for stricter oversight of cosmetic surgery facilities in Lagos.

Health advocate Dr. Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as “Aproko Doctor,” reiterated warnings he made years ago regarding the risks associated with Brazilian Butt Lift procedures.

Medical experts often cite BBL as one of the most dangerous cosmetic surgeries due to complications such as fat embolism, infections, and anesthesia risks.

Some studies estimate the procedure’s mortality rate at approximately one in 3,000, significantly higher than many other elective surgeries.

In response to the allegations, Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery released a statement denying that any deaths had occurred at their facility.

The clinic described the circulating claims as misinformation and insisted that it follows strict medical protocols and safety standards in all procedures performed.

The case has sparked renewed debate about cosmetic surgery regulations in Nigeria, with many calling on health authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding Jessica’s death and ensure stricter monitoring of private aesthetic clinics.
