ZUPCO Offers Cheaper Travel at US$0.50
Affordable public transport is once again making a difference for thousands of commuters across Zimbabwe, as Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) expands its bus services on both urban and intercity routes.
Passengers are now paying as little as US$0.50 per trip, a major contrast to the US$1.00 or more commonly charged by private kombis, especially during peak hours or rainy days. This lower, fixed fare is helping workers, students, and families manage their daily expenses more easily.
One key advantage of ZUPCO services is price stability. Unlike private operators who often increase fares without notice, ZUPCO fares are regulated, giving commuters certainty and protection from sudden price hikes. At the same time, the presence of ZUPCO buses helps keep private transport operators in check, as they are forced to maintain competitive prices.
The use of larger buses is also improving efficiency. With some buses carrying up to 64 passengers, more people can travel at once compared to smaller, 15-seater kombis. This helps reduce overcrowding and long queues at busy ranks such as Mbare Musika and City Hall in Bulawayo.
ZUPCO’s network now covers several key areas. In the northern region, buses operate from Mbare Musika to destinations like Mutare, Kariba, and Rushinga. In the south, services run from Makhokhoba to places such as Victoria Falls, Beitbridge, and Gwanda. Peri-urban routes connecting towns like Chitungwiza, Norton, and Ruwa are also playing an important role in supporting daily commuters.
This development supports Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 goals of improving infrastructure and making essential services more accessible to citizens. However, the long-term success of the programme will depend on proper maintenance of buses and the continued addition of new vehicles.
