A Gweru man who was arrested following a violent shootout with law enforcement officers last week has been sentenced to two decades behind bars.

Obedience Takaedza Mutasa appeared before the Zvishavane Regional Court following his arrest on March 19, 2026. The court moved swiftly to convict Mutasa, handing down a 20-year prison sentence on Tuesday.

The conviction stems from an incident in Gweru where Mutasa engaged in a gun battle with the police. According to an official statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on March 24, the sentencing serves as a stern warning to criminal syndicates.

Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi emphasized that any individuals who resist, obstruct, or attack officers during their lawful duties will face the full force of the law. The ZRP reiterated its commitment to maintaining order and ensuring that offenders receive lengthy custodial sentences for such violent crimes.
