ZPCS Investigates Inmate Death at Chikurubi
Everisto Zhuwao
The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has launched an independent investigation following the death of an inmate at Chikurubi Farm Prison last Friday.
Gift Mbowa, who was serving a 12-month sentence, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 0300 hours on March 20, 2026.
According to an official statement released by prison authorities on Wednesday, Mbowa had complained of chest pains during the night before he was discovered dead.
The ZPCS confirmed that the deceased’s family has been notified and has offered its condolences during this period.
The investigation comes in response to reports circulating on social media alleging that Mbowa’s death may have resulted from an assault.
Prison officials stated that they are taking these allegations seriously and are committed to transparency, as well as the protection of all persons in their custody.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation while the formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway.
The ZPCS maintained that any conduct found to be inconsistent with human rights and professional standards will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The Service has promised to provide further updates as more verified information becomes available.
