Highlanders Must Fix Scoring Issues to Stay Competitive

Highlanders FC’s struggles in front of goal have already drawn attention early in the season, with Warriors coach Marian Marinica identifying the team’s lack of finishing power as their main concern.

Although Bosso have impressed with organised defending and encouraging build-up play, they have failed to capitalise on scoring opportunities, resulting in draws in all four of their opening league fixtures.

Marinica, who has been closely observing the Bulawayo side and recently faced them during a midweek training match involving the Zimbabwe national team, believes Highlanders are performing well in most departments but falling short in the attacking phase.

“Highlanders are a strong side, but they are not converting enough of their chances,” said Marinica. “I have watched their league games, and it was evident again when we played them. They create good situations and play attractive football, yet the finishing touch is missing.”

Despite the slow start, the Warriors coach expressed confidence that the team will improve as combinations begin to click.

“They are still building cohesion after just four matches. There is obvious quality in the squad, and several players have the potential to represent the national team. In fact, their style of play influenced our decision to call up two of their players,” he added.

Highlanders legend Benjani Mwaruwari shared similar sentiments, acknowledging that scoring goals remains the team’s biggest hurdle.

“Our main challenge at the moment is putting the ball in the net. Once we solve that, we will be able to compete strongly,” said Mwaruwari.

Statistics reflect Bosso’s situation. The team has managed only three goals in four matches while conceding the same number — evidence of defensive stability but limited attacking efficiency.

While Highlanders have proven difficult to defeat, their inability to convert control of matches into victories is beginning to cost them valuable points. Unless they sharpen their finishing soon, their promising performances risk being defined by missed chances rather than results.
