FECOFOOT President Flees Congo Ahead of Trial in FIFA Funds Scandal
A major corruption scandal has shaken African football following the conviction in absentia of Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT) president Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, who reportedly fled the Republic of the Congo with his family before appearing in court over allegations of financial misconduct.
Mayolas, together with his wife and son, is accused of embezzling US$1.1 million provided by FIFA under its COVID-19 relief programme in February 2021. The funds were intended to support football development initiatives in the country during the pandemic.
According to prosecutors, part of the financial package — amounting to US$500,000 — had been specifically earmarked for the women’s national team, raising concerns about the impact of the alleged misappropriation on women’s football development.
Judicial proceedings continued despite the family’s absence, with the court ultimately finding them guilty in absentia.
Authorities have since issued international arrest warrants through Interpol as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to locate the trio. Reports indicate they may be hiding in several African countries, including South Africa, Cameroon, Gabon or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The case has drawn widespread attention across the continent, with analysts describing it as one of the most significant corruption scandals to affect African football governance in recent years.
FIFA introduced the COVID-19 relief funding programme to assist member associations struggling financially during the global pandemic, with strict requirements that the money be used to sustain football operations and development structures.
The unfolding scandal has renewed scrutiny over financial accountability and governance standards within football administrations across Africa, as stakeholders call for stronger oversight mechanisms to safeguard development funds.
