Telecommunications firm NetOne has entered into a strategic partnership with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) aimed at accelerating digital transformation within Zimbabwe’s tourism industry.

The agreement, formalised during a ceremony attended by senior government officials and industry stakeholders, is expected to modernise tourism operations and improve service delivery through the expanded use of information and communication technologies.

Speaking at the event, NetOne board representatives described the partnership as a milestone aligned with the country’s National Development Strategy 2, which prioritises innovation, digitalisation, and inclusive economic growth.

In remarks delivered on his behalf by General Manager for Financial Services Joseph Machiva, NetOne Chief Executive Officer Raphael Mushanawani said the initiative supports national development goals under Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030 agenda.

“This collaboration is firmly anchored in the national vision towards the attainment of Vision 2030 and the realisation of an upper middle-income economy,” he said.

Mushanawani said the partnership goes beyond a conventional corporate agreement, positioning it as part of a broader national drive centred on innovation, inclusion, and digital transformation.

He noted that Zimbabwe’s tourism sector continues to gain international recognition as a competitive global destination, adding that the partnership would consolidate these gains by improving efficiency and expanding the sector’s reach through technology.

“We are not redefining tourism but strengthening it by enhancing efficiency, expanding its reach, and deepening its impact,” he said.

Under the agreement, NetOne will assist ZTA in digitising its inspection systems by replacing manual processes with integrated digital platforms, enabling real-time data collection and improving regulatory efficiency.

The telecommunications operator also committed to expanding network coverage in key tourism corridors, rolling out Wi-Fi services in strategic locations, and introducing e-tourism SIM cards tailored for international visitors.

“These initiatives are part of a deliberate effort to ensure that Zimbabwe’s tourism sector remains competitive, connected, and responsive to the demands of a modern digital economy,” Mushanawani said.

Government officials welcomed the partnership, underscoring the importance of coordinated institutional efforts in driving national development.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Beaulah Chirume, said the initiative reflects a whole-of-government approach to digital transformation.

“This is not an isolated programme. It is a government-driven intervention implemented through coordinated institutional action in pursuit of national development objectives,” she said.

The Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry also emphasised the importance of cross-sector collaboration. Chief Director Tarirai Musonza, representing Permanent Secretary Takaruza Munyanyiwa, said tourism development depends on integrated support systems.

“No sector operates in isolation. Tourism thrives on the support of ICT, transport, local government, immigration, security, environmental management, and the private sector,” she said.

Officials said the partnership demonstrates how technology can be leveraged to enhance service delivery, improve visitor experience, and support local communities dependent on tourism.

Mushanawani also acknowledged the role of Auxillia Mnangagwa in promoting Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage and strengthening the country’s tourism brand.

NetOne said it will continue positioning itself as a national digital enabler, supporting the development of a modern, efficient, and globally competitive tourism sector.
