Amai’s traditional Cook-out competition officially underway in Bulawayo and Masvingo

The Amai’s Traditional Cook-out Competition 2026 is officially taking place in both Bulawayo Metropolitan Province and Masvingo Province, with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry declaring the events a powerful revival of Zimbabwe’s culinary identity.

 

In Bulawayo, the competition is already underway at the United College of Education, while Masvingo Province is hosting its own heats today, bringing together professional chefs, tertiary students, community members and persons with disabilities battling for a spot in the National Finale.

 

“Amai’s Traditional Cook-out Competition 2026, Bulawayo Metropolitan Province is officially underway at United College of Education, and it is more than just a contest, it is a powerful revival of our identity.

 

“From the sizzle of indigenous ingredients to the mastery of age old techniques, our professional chefs, students and the community are proving that our culinary traditions are world-class,” the Ministry said in a statement.

 

The events celebrate indigenous flavours and age-old cooking methods, positioning Zimbabwe’s gastronomy on a global stage.

 

“By celebrating these flavors, we aren’t just cooking, we’re preserving the stories, health, and soul of Zimbabwe for the next generation.”

 

In Masvingo Province Amai’s Traditional Cook-out Competition is also currently underway, where Professional Chefs, Tertiary Students, Community Members, and Persons with Disabilities will battle it out for a spot in the National Finale.

 

Residents are being encouraged to attend. “If you’re in the City of Kings and Queens and Masvingo, come witness this beautiful display of #NhakaYedu. Let’s take pride in what is ours!” the Ministry urged

 

Launched by the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, the Amai’s Traditional Cook-out Competition is a national initiative aimed at reviving and celebrating Zimbabwe’s indigenous culinary heritage.

 

The competition runs across all provinces, with categories for professional chefs, tertiary students, community members, and persons with disabilities.

 

Each provincial heat showcases traditional ingredients, cooking techniques, and recipes passed down through generations. Winners from each province advance to the National Finale, where Zimbabwe’s best traditional dishes are crowned.

 

The event also promotes tourism, nutrition, and cultural preservation, reinforcing the #NhakaYedu (Our Heritage) campaign.
