Government Halts Mining Operations in Bindura Over Safety Concerns

The Government of Zimbabwe has ordered the immediate suspension of all mining and related activities at Botha Mine and in parts of Freda Rebecca Gold Mine in Bindura, citing serious safety concerns.

In a letter issued by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, authorities said the decision was taken to protect lives following a rise in dangerous incidents at the sites. These include reports of shootings, assaults, and intimidation among individuals operating in and around the mines.

The government also raised concern over the increasing presence of unauthorised people and illegal mining activities, which have made it difficult to maintain proper control of operations.

According to the Ministry, there has been a major breakdown in safety management systems at the affected sites. Issues highlighted include poor supervision, failure to follow safety procedures, and non-compliance with occupational health and safety standards. In some cases, workers were reportedly operating without proper protective equipment (PPE), putting their lives at risk.

Authorities said the situation now poses an immediate and unacceptable danger to workers and surrounding communities.

“The conditions currently prevailing at the mine sites are unsafe and cannot be allowed to continue,” the Ministry stated.

The suspension will remain in place until all safety issues are addressed and mining operations can resume under strict compliance with regulations.

The government has urged all stakeholders to cooperate in restoring order, improving safety standards, and ensuring that mining activities are conducted legally and responsibly.

Bindura, a key mining area in Zimbabwe, has in recent years faced challenges related to illegal mining and safety violations, prompting calls for stronger enforcement and oversight in the sector.
