Meet Zimbabwe’s New Minister of Lands, Vangelis Peter Haritatos
Zimbabwe has appointed Vangelis Peter Haritatos as the new Minister of Lands, marking a fresh chapter for one of the country’s most important sectors.
Born on 8 April 1986 in Redcliff, near Kwekwe, Haritatos brings a diverse academic and professional background to the role. He is also known for his ability to speak fluent Shona, a skill that may help him connect with communities across the country.
Haritatos began his education at Eiffel Flats Primary School before attending Jameson High School. He later enrolled at Harare International School, where he continued his studies. His academic journey then took him abroad, where he studied at John Cabot University in Italy, focusing on international affairs and international business. During this time, he also completed part of his studies through a joint programme with the University of Wales.
In 2007, he graduated from Kansas State University in the United States with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He also pursued further studies in business administration, strengthening his understanding of both governance and economic systems.
Now aged 40, Haritatos steps into a critical position as head of the Ministry of Lands. The ministry plays a central role in Zimbabwe’s development, particularly in managing land ownership, agricultural productivity, and rural livelihoods.
His appointment comes at a time when the government is focusing on resolving long-standing land issues and improving agricultural productivity. There are expectations that he will work towards ensuring that land ownership benefits ordinary Zimbabweans while also making the sector more profitable and sustainable.
His international education and background in economics and business could help bring new ideas to the ministry. However, he also faces the challenge of addressing complex land policies and ensuring fairness, transparency, and efficiency in land distribution.
