Police Beef Up Security in Harare Suburbs
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has deployed a heavy presence of officers in the Mabelreign and Marlborough suburbs of Harare to combat a surge in robberies and other criminal activities.
This strategic move, announced by Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi, aims to reassure residents of their safety and restore order in the affected neighbourhoods.
“The comprehensive deployments were implemented to curb the rising threat of crime in these residential areas. Members of the public must actively participate in this security initiative by reporting any suspicious movements,” Comm Nyathi said.
Police have specifically told residents to watch out for unknown individuals roaming aimlessly or sitting on road culverts and drainage systems. This call for vigilance also extends to suspicious vehicles, whether they are moving, parked, or displaying registration plates.
To facilitate quick reporting, the ZRP has provided several contact lines, including the National Complaints Desk at (0242) 703631 and a dedicated WhatsApp number, 0712 800 197. The Support Unit Reaction Team is also on standby at 0714 336 924 to handle urgent security breaches.
Beyond increased patrols, the police have appealed to both residents and the Harare City Council to improve physical security measures. They recommended the installation of street lights, floodlights, and sturdy burglar bars on windows and doors to deter intruders.
“Anyone planning to visit relatives late at night should give prior notice whenever possible. Community safety is a shared responsibility, and neighbours should stay connected for the swift mobilisation of emergency services,” Comm Nyathi concluded.
