Zimbabwean Politician Job Sikhala Appears in Pretoria Court on Explosives Charges
Pretoria, South Africa – Prominent Zimbabwean opposition politician and former Member of Parliament, Job Sikhala, alongside his uncle, Alex Thema (78), appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates Court in Tshwane on Monday, 4 May 2026. The duo faces charges related to the alleged possession of illegal explosives.
During the court proceedings, Sikhala’s legal representative, Attorney Bongani Dee of Mabuza Attorneys, formally notified the state of their intention to seek a withdrawal of the case should investigations remain incomplete by 3 August 2026.
Mr. Sikhala articulated his concerns regarding the protracted legal process, stating, “I don’t think there’s any other reason why they would want to continuously keep me in South Africa rather than releasing me to go and resume my work in Zimbabwe and meet my family.” His remarks underscore the perceived impact of the ongoing case on his professional and personal life.
The outstanding investigative components cited include a comprehensive review of cellphone records, the collection of 205 witness statements, and forensic analysis of DNA evidence. These elements are deemed crucial for the progression of the prosecution’s case.
Sikhala further emphasized the imperative of clearing his name, particularly given his public profile as a significant political figure in Zimbabwe. “I can’t leave this jurisdiction until my name is cleared on these allegations, which everyone knows were the creation of enemies back in Zimbabwe, who persuaded and followed me into South Africa,” he asserted. He highlighted the professional implications, noting, “I’m a legal practitioner, a registered lawyer in Zimbabwe. I need to go back and work for my family. These delays are prejudicing me. I’m a family man with 11 children.”
Presiding Magistrate Lesetja Mphahlele subsequently ordered a postponement of the matter to 3 August 2026, granting the state additional time to conclude its investigations.
The adjournment aims to facilitate the thorough preparation required for the case to proceed.
