Former Zimbabwe captain and ex-Premier League striker Benjani Mwaruwari is facing legal action after the City of Johannesburg filed a claim in the Johannesburg High Court over alleged unpaid municipal bills exceeding R1.35 million.
Court documents state that the municipality is seeking to recover R1,353,896, which it says is owed for electricity, water, sanitation, refuse collection and property rates at Mwaruwari’s home in Kyalami Estates.
The City claims the outstanding amount remained unpaid as of June 2026 despite issuing monthly accounts and a formal letter of demand on June 17.
The municipality is asking the court to order payment of the outstanding balance, interest at 10.5 percent per year, legal costs and any other relief the court considers appropriate.
He has not yet submitted a formal response to the lawsuit. The matter is still before the courts, and the municipality’s allegations have not yet been tested or proven.
