A 34-year-old man from Bulilima District in Matabeleland South has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of murdering his wife during a dispute over suspected poisoning.

The sentence was handed down by the Bulawayo High Court after Honest Nkomo was found guilty of killing his 27-year-old wife, Milikani Moyo, in a violent attack that occurred on July 16, 2024.

According to court proceedings, Nkomo returned home and allegedly found Moyo sprinkling an unidentified substance into a plate of porridge prepared for him.

Suspecting that the porridge had been poisoned, he reportedly demanded that she eat it first to prove it was safe. Moyo refused, triggering a heated argument between the couple.

The dispute escalated into violence when Nkomo struck Moyo on the head with a hammer before assaulting her with a pick handle. She sustained severe head injuries and died at the scene.

After the attack, Nkomo reportedly left the homestead and informed his aunt about what had happened. The matter was subsequently reported to police, leading to his arrest.

During the trial, prosecutors presented the blood-stained hammer and pick handle used in the assault as exhibits. A post-mortem report confirmed that Moyo died from severe head trauma.

Several witnesses testified before the court, including local villagers and the investigating officer. The prosecution successfully proved its case, resulting in Nkomo’s conviction for murder.

The case has once again drawn attention to the growing concern over fatal domestic violence incidents in Matabeleland South and across Zimbabwe, with law enforcement authorities continuing to urge families to seek peaceful means of resolving disputes.

The incident occurred in Bulilima District and was heard at the Bulawayo High Court. Justice Ngoni Nduna imposed the 30-year sentence.
