The aroma of sadza, muriwo unedovi, (maguru and matumbu cow offals) and grilled meat filled the air on Monday as Chinese nationals and Zimbabwean community members gathered side by side in Goromonzi to celebrate Africa Day-not with speeches alone, but with sport, spoons, pots and shared laughter around a cookout competition.

Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ) brought together local women, traditional leaders and its Chinese workforce for a vibrant celebration under the continental theme, “Sports and Culture: Catalysts for Climate Change.” But it was the cooking fires that stole the show.

The cookout competition, run under the local theme “Where flavours meet, cultures connect,” saw local women showcase traditional Zimbabwean cuisine, mirroring the First Lady’s national cookout initiative, whose finals were held in Midlands Province.

The First Lady’s programme promotes traditional foods, healthy living, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

In a statement that captured the day’s spirit, the company said: “The cookout competition perfectly captures the beauty of Africa.

“Across our continent, food has always been more than nourishment, it is identity, history, storytelling, family and unity. Around a meal, strangers become friends and neighbours become family and cultures find common ground.”

Beyond the culinary displays, an array of traditional games were played, fostering warm interaction between PLZ staff, Chinese nationals and the local community.
Several bouts of tug-of-war hogged the limelight. Locals and Chinese nationals tussled to look for the days winner.

Entertainment provided by the University of Zimbabwe group, Confucius brought both Chinese and locals onto the dance floor. It was a blend of culture, dance, sport and food for the mining community.

Traditional leaders, including Chief Mambo Chikwaka, graced the occasion alongside District Development Coordinator Ms Prisca Dube, community members and Chinese representatives led by Mr Shaoyi.

Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe reaffirmed its commitment to responsible mining while investing in people, preserving culture and strengthening communities.

“This year’s Africa Day theme speaks directly to the spirit of unity, resilience, innovation and sustainability that defines our continent.

“At Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, this theme resonates deeply with us as a new energy minerals producer contributing toward a cleaner and more sustainable future,” said the company.

The company thanked the people of Goromonzi for their continued partnership and hospitality, stating that sustainable development is achieved when companies and communities grow together with mutual respect, trust and shared purpose.

The director of ceremonies was Public Relations Manager Patience Mushore-Chizodza, whose diction was noted for its great finesse and interaction with the the audience.

For the women who stirred pots under the African sun, watched by Chinese nationals clapping and tasting, it was more than a competition.

It was proof that even in a mining town, culture can be the deepest vein of all.
