Read E-PaperShowa is reportedly involved in commodity trading across Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The complainant claims to have evidence relating to the disputed transaction and has warned other businesspeople to conduct thorough checks before entering into deals with him.
The latest allegations have also brought renewed attention to a previous controversy involving Royal Basic, a company associated with Showa and operating under Touch Africa Group.
The company was linked to a P18.925 million sorghum supply contract awarded by the Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board (BAMB), which reportedly raised concerns over advance payments and alleged inconsistencies in the quality and quantities of grain supplied.

According to Botswana publication Sunday Standard, the matter attracted the attention of the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) and the Directorate on Intelligence and Security (DIS). The controversy also reportedly led to action against senior BAMB officials.
However, the earlier BAMB controversy and the latest business dispute are separate matters. The allegations do not, on their own, establish personal wrongdoing by Showa.
Businesspeople considering commodity transactions have been advised to verify the identities and credentials of their trading partners, inspect goods before making payments, review contractual terms and seek independent legal advice where necessary.
Those who suspect they have been affected by similar transactions have also been encouraged to retain contracts, payment records, messages and other relevant documents and report suspected wrongdoing to the appropriate authorities.
Showa had not responded to the latest allegations at the time of publication.
