In a notice issued on Thursday, October 15, Acting Town Clerk Warren Chiwawa said the directive targets illegal murals, under-awning signs and verandah advertisements that contravene council by-laws.

The notice requires affected businesses and property owners to comply with the directive within the stipulated period.

The enforcement exercise falls under Operation Chenesa Harare, a citywide initiative aimed at improving cleanliness, restoring order and ensuring compliance with municipal regulations.

The operation has seen council authorities step up efforts to regulate activities in the CBD, including the removal of unauthorised structures and the enforcement of rules governing business operations and public spaces.

The latest move is intended to bring uniformity to advertising signage while ensuring that businesses operate within the requirements set by the local authority.

Business operators and property owners who have installed advertising signs without the required authorisation are expected to remove them within 48 hours of the notice.

The council’s directive comes as Harare continues implementing measures to improve the appearance and management of the city centre under Operation Chenesa Harare.
