Popular spirit medium Gogo Chihoro, whose real name is Memory Madamburi, brought entertainment, culture and celebration to Mt Darwin when she hosted a colourful birthday bash at Kwa Memo on August 21.
The celebration attracted residents, followers, friends and entertainment enthusiasts from different parts of the country, giving the usually quiet area a lively atmosphere while providing a welcome boost to local businesses.
Popular musicians, including Freeman, Shinsoman, Guspy Warrior, Culture Love, Herman, Gidza Boy and other performers, entertained the crowd during the night.
A magician also captivated revellers with a display of tricks, adding variety to an event that combined music, culture and family entertainment.
The celebration carried special significance for Madamburi, who was born in Mt Darwin before relocating to Harare.
She chose to hold the birthday celebrations in her home district as a way of honouring her roots and attracting visitors to the area.
Following the successful event, Madamburi said she intends to continue organising entertainment and cultural programmes in Mt Darwin to help promote domestic tourism and expose the district’s attractions and economic potential.
The initiative could create opportunities for local musicians, traditional performers, food vendors, accommodation providers, transport operators and small businesses.
Mt Darwin is widely associated with Zimbabwe’s liberation history and is home to several cultural, historical and natural attractions.
Regular entertainment events could complement these sites by encouraging visitors to spend more time in the district.
The birthday bash demonstrated how private cultural and entertainment initiatives can contribute to domestic tourism by drawing people to communities outside Zimbabwe’s major cities.
Local businesses benefited from the increased movement of visitors, while emerging performers were given an opportunity to showcase their talents before a larger audience.
Guspy Warrior later thanked Mt Darwin residents for supporting the celebration, describing it as an enjoyable night.
Madamburi said future events would seek to combine entertainment, African culture and community participation while marketing Mt Darwin as a destination worth visiting.
Her plans come as calls grow for individuals, businesses and communities to complement government efforts by creating events and experiences capable of stimulating domestic tourism and supporting local economic development.
