Zimbabwe’s Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, has been elected Second Vice Chair of the World Health Organisation (WHO) African Regional Committee.
The development took place during the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa (AFR/RC76), which is being held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 24 to 28 August 2026.
The session is being chaired by Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, H.E. Dr Mekdes Daba Feyssa.
The AFR/RC76 has brought together Ministers of Health and senior government officials from the 47 WHO African Region Member States.
WHO leadership, development partners and other key stakeholders in the health sector are also attending the meeting.
The delegates are discussing major health priorities affecting the African Region, including ways of strengthening health systems and improving healthcare delivery across member states.
Dr Mombeshora’s election to the position gives Zimbabwe a role in the leadership of the WHO African Regional Committee as countries deliberate on key health challenges facing the continent.
The WHO Regional Committee for Africa is the organisation’s decision-making body for health matters in the African Region, bringing together member states to set priorities and guide regional health programmes.
