Today, Zimbabwe’s parliamentarians are set to vote on Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, a proposal that has sparked intense debate across the political divide.
The vote comes at a time when many legislators from both the ruling ZANU-PF party and the opposition have expressed support for the bill, with only a handful remaining opposed to the proposed amendments.
Among opposition legislators who publicly indicated their support for the bill during parliamentary debates are Dr Josiah Makombe, Samantha Mureyani, Honourable Zhou and Honourable Matsunga. They join several other opposition MPs who have spoken in favour of the proposed constitutional changes, signalling growing cross-party backing for the measure.
The list of legislators expected to support the bill continues to grow, with estimates suggesting that as many as 40 opposition MPs could vote in favour of the proposal.
Parliament is expected to conduct the vote through an open ballot. Should the bill secure the constitutionally required two-thirds majority, it will proceed to the next stage of the legislative process before it can become law.
The outcome of the vote is being closely watched, as supporters argue the amendments will strengthen governance and enhance policy continuity, while critics contend they could have far-reaching implications for Zimbabwe’s constitutional democracy.
