Police have confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old man in connection with the theft of armoured copper cables valued at USD 12,000 from Zimplats Smelting Company in Selous.
Jairosi James Moyo was apprehended following a police investigation into the incident, which occurred on 7 September 2026.
Moyo, together with three accomplices who remain at large, allegedly stole the armoured copper cables from the smelting company.
National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspect was tracked down while allegedly stripping the stolen cables.
“Following police investigations, the suspect was tracked and apprehended while removing the cable casings along Makwiro Road, Selous. The other three suspects fled the scene,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
Police recovered one 150mm x 91m, three-core armoured cable, a machete and a knife from the suspect.
Commissioner Nyathi said a manhunt had been launched for the three accomplices.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing to the public to assist with any information that may lead to the arrest of the three suspects who fled the scene,” he said. “Anyone with information should report to the nearest police station.”
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
