Zimbabwean politician Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to officially commission the New Glovers Solar Energy Plant in Munyati, Kwekwe, on Friday as the country intensifies efforts to expand renewable energy production and ease electricity shortages.
The solar facility is currently producing 10 megawatts during its initial development phase, powered by 18,600 solar panels and 31 inverters. Developers plan to increase output to 110MW through 10 further expansion stages.
The project is part of Zimbabwe’s expanding Independent Power Producer (IPP) programme, with the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority reportedly having licensed more than 100 IPPs nationwide.
Authorities say the investment is expected to improve national energy stability, cut reliance on imported electricity, and provide support to mining operations and industrial activity in Midlands Province.
The solar plant is also projected to create employment opportunities for local communities while contributing to Zimbabwe’s broader renewable energy ambitions and Vision 2030 development goals.
