South African border authorities have intercepted a massive drug consignment worth nearly R1 billion at the busy Beitbridge Border Post following an intensive operation targeting a truck travelling from Malawi to South Africa.
The shipment was intercepted on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, after border officials flagged the truck for inspection at the port of entry.
Authorities said an extensive eight-hour search led to the discovery of 713 000 grams of methaqualone, a precursor chemical commonly associated with the manufacture of the illicit drug Mandrax.
The seized consignment has an estimated street value of R998.2 million, making it one of the largest drug interceptions recorded at the border crossing in recent years.
Three suspects were arrested during the operation and are currently being held at Musina Police Station pending their court appearance.
The interception has raised concerns over organised cross-border drug trafficking syndicates using regional transport corridors to smuggle narcotics into South Africa.
Investigations into the origin of the consignment, its intended destination, and the wider criminal network linked to the shipment are continuing.
