Robbers Blast ZB Bank ATM in Gutu, Escape With Cash

Armed robbers reportedly broke into ZB Bank’s Mpandawana branch in Gutu, Masvingo, during the night and blew up an ATM before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

The incident occurred at the bank’s branch at Mpandawana Growth Point, with the exact amount stolen yet to be established.

Preliminary information suggests that the suspects entered the bank through the roof before gaining access to the ATM, which they reportedly blasted open.

The bank’s alarm system was triggered during the break-in, alerting the branch manager, who reportedly rushed to the premises.

However, the manager was allegedly injured while attempting to flee after arriving at the bank. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

Details surrounding the robbery remain sketchy, including the number of suspects involved and the type of explosives allegedly used to gain access to the ATM.

The amount of cash taken from the machine has also not been disclosed.

Police have not yet issued an official statement on the incident.

Efforts to obtain a comment from national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

The Gutu robbery comes about three months after a separate robbery was reported at ZB Bank’s Ngezi branch.

Investigations into the latest incident are expected to establish how the suspects gained entry into the bank and identify those behind the robbery.
