Sakunda Holdings is partnering with the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) in a major project to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology at three of the country’s leading football stadiums.
The partnership will see VAR facilities installed at the National Sports Stadium, Rufaro Stadium and Barbourfields Stadium, according to ZBC.
Under the project, the National Sports Stadium is expected to become the first venue to receive the technology, with installation targeted for completion by the end of 2026. Work at Rufaro Stadium and Barbourfields Stadium is expected to follow, with the rollout across all three venues scheduled for completion by March 2027.
Sakunda’s involvement represents a significant private-sector investment in the modernisation of Zimbabwean football infrastructure. By supporting the installation of VAR facilities, the company is helping create the technical capacity required for match officials to review key incidents and make more informed decisions during games.
The partnership with ZIFA is expected to bring Zimbabwe’s major football venues closer to international standards and improve the country’s readiness to host high-profile domestic and international matches.
The initiative also highlights the growing role of corporate partnerships in supporting the development of local sport, with Sakunda’s backing providing the financial impetus for the adoption of technology that has become central to elite football around the world.
