Read E-PaperA new science laboratory has been commissioned at Sojini Secondary School in Mbembesi Village, outside Bulawayo, following a 14-day construction project funded by Zimbabwean businesswoman Zodwa Mkandla through her foundation.
The facility was officially handed over on Saturday, October 31, in a development expected to improve access to practical science education for learners in the rural community.
South African construction company Afribiz Invest undertook the project, completing the laboratory in just two weeks.
The new facility is expected to provide students with improved opportunities to undertake practical science lessons, helping bridge the gap between rural and urban schools in accessing essential educational infrastructure.
The handover ceremony was attended by a delegation of senior government officials led by Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo. The event was held under the auspices of the Office of the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa.
The initiative also carries personal significance for Mkandla, who is a former student of Sojini Secondary School. Her decision to support the institution through her foundation represents an investment in the same community where she received her education.
Beyond the school development project, the Zodwa Mkandla Foundation extended its support to vulnerable members of the community through the distribution of 200 food parcels, blankets and wheelchairs to elderly residents.
Nearly 400 schoolgirls also benefited from the distribution of sanitary dignity pads.
The project is expected to contribute towards improving the learning environment at the rural school while supporting broader efforts to promote equal access to educational opportunities.
