One person died during a stampede at the National Sports Stadium on Monday evening as Zimbabwe hosted the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.

Read E-PaperAccording to a police statement dated September 28, 2026, the incident occurred at Gate Number Two at around 6:30pm, shortly after the start of the match.
Police said the fatal incident involved a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that swift and comprehensive investigations are currently underway after a fatal incident involving a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian at the National Sports Stadium,” the statement said.
The Commissioner-General of Police expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that investigations would be conducted to establish exactly what happened.
Police said a detailed statement would be issued in due course.
