Tafadzwa Musenami, Panashe Mategude and Godfrey Zikumwa appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Mrs Ruth Moyo on Friday. The magistrate advised the trio to approach the High Court for bail.

According to the State, the incident occurred on August 6 in Cell 9 of the psychiatric unit, where the three accused were being held alongside the late Bornington Tanganyika.

Prosecutors allege that at about 7.15pm, the three confronted Tanganyika, accusing him of being violent before restraining him.

The State claims the accused tied Tanganyika’s hands behind his back and his legs using straps made from blankets while he was lying face-down on the floor.

It is further alleged that they covered his head with his jacket and a towel, allegedly causing him to suffocate and die.

The incident was later reported to police, resulting in the arrest of the three suspects.
