Update on Budiriro Tragedy and Remedial Actions

Harare, Zimbabwe – Following a tragic incident in Budiriro 3, Harare, where three lives were lost due to an open sewer excavation, significant steps have been taken to address the situation and prevent future occurrences.

The incident, which saw three bodies recovered from a mud-filled trench, has prompted widespread concern and calls for accountability regarding municipal infrastructure maintenance.

Honorable Albert T. Mavunga, the Deputy Minister of Local Government & Public Works and Member of Parliament for Nketa Constituency, visited the site to assess the situation firsthand.

During his visit, he was briefed by Mr. Mugove Chabuda, the Harare City Council Region 3 Manager, on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and the ongoing remedial efforts.

In response to the accident, the hazardous pit has been promptly closed, and damaged sewerage pipes have been repaired.

Council workers are actively on the ground, ensuring the completion of necessary repairs and implementing measures to enhance safety within the community.

The City of Harare has also initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the cause and prevent similar tragedies.
