Wicknell Chivayo Rewards Scottland FC With US$250,000 After Historic PSL Triumph
Newly promoted side Scottland FC have made Zimbabwean football history after clinching the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) title, becoming the first club in over 40 years to win the championship in their debut top-flight season.
The remarkable achievement mirrors Black Rhinos’ 1984 triumph, when they won the league in their inaugural PSL campaign. Scottland FC, founded and led by Hon. Scott Sakupwanya, Member of Parliament for Mabvuku, sealed the title in what many are calling one of the most inspiring underdog stories in local football.
Businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivayo was among the first to publicly congratulate the team, hailing the victory as a “historic moment in our lifetime.” In a statement posted on social media, Chivayo praised Sakupwanya’s leadership and the players’ determination, calling their rise from Mabvuku’s grassroots football to national champions “a story that deserves to be celebrated in grand style.”
“You have defied all odds and etched your name in the history books of Zimbabwean football,” Chivayo wrote. “From humble beginnings in Mabvuku to clinching the league title, this is nothing short of historic.”
As part of his congratulatory message, Chivayo announced a US$250,000 reward for the team, describing it as a “small token of appreciation” to be shared among the players, coach, and technical staff. He invited the team captain and manager to meet him personally on Saturday to collect the funds.
Chivayo also reaffirmed his sponsorship commitment to Scotland FC, pledging continued support aimed at strengthening the squad for the upcoming 2025/2026 season. He said the club’s success story would inspire more investment in local talent and position Scotland FC as a dominant force in Zimbabwean and African football.
“Come next season, Scotland FC will remain champions and become the envy of African football,” he said, humorously adding, “at this rate, we might soon sign players like Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland.”
Scottland FC’s championship marks a proud moment for Mabvuku, a suburb of Harare, with supporters celebrating their team’s meteoric rise from the lower divisions to national glory.
The win cements Scotland FC’s place in the annals of Zimbabwean football and adds a new chapter to the Premier Soccer League’s history of unexpected triumphs.
