54 cattle hit by foot and mouth outbreak on Botswana border
Veterinary authorities have confirmed a major Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, with 54 cases identified in cattle herds in a district bordering Botswana.
The outbreak, confirmed on 5 January 2026, is centered on the Maholi and Hannavale dip tanks in Mangwe District, Matabeleland South Province.
Initial investigations point to wild buffalo that strayed into communal grazing areas two months ago as the likely source.
Laboratory tests have identified the strain as the FMD SAT 1 serotype. Samples have been sent to a World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reference laboratory in Botswana for further analysis and vaccine matching.
The Directorate of Veterinary Services has activated an immediate emergency response. A strict quarantine and livestock movement ban is now in force.
A 20-kilometre radius vaccination belt is being established around the epicenter, alongside intensified surveillance and public awareness campaigns.
“We are committed to transparency and collaboration in managing this outbreak,” stated the Directorate in a statement.
The outbreak poses a significant threat to the local cattle population of over 2 400 animals and the region’s livestock trade.
Farmers are urged to contact the Directorate of Veterinary Services for further information.
