The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has declared that the continent is closer than ever to producing a FIFA World Cup champion, following what he described as Africa’s strongest-ever performance at the 2026 global tournament.
Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg, Motsepe hailed the continent’s campaign after a record-breaking nine of the continent’s 10 representatives progressed to the Round of 32 . The 2026 tournament, the first to feature an expanded 48-team format, saw Africa’s participation double from five teams in 2022 to 10 this year, providing a broader platform for the continent’s footballing growth .
“Our clear objective, and we are now more confident than ever before coming from the FIFA World Cup, is to see an African nation becoming champions of the world,” Motsepe said .
The performances on the pitch have significantly strengthened CAF’s long-term ambition. Historically, only six African countries had ever qualified for the knockout stage, with a maximum of two advancing in any single year prior to 2026 . This year, the continent achieved a 90% qualification rate from the group stage to the Round of 32, with nations like Morocco, South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cape Verde, Egypt, Congo, and Algeria making history .
Morocco continued its stellar global run, reaching the quarter-finals for a second successive World Cup, while Egypt advanced to the Round of 16. Surprises like Cape Verde and Congo captured the world’s attention, demonstrating the deepening strength of African soccer across diverse nations .
According to Motsepe, Africa accounted for 20.8 per cent of the teams at the tournament but contributed 28.1 per cent of the nations that reached the knockout stage .
To build on this momentum, the CAF president called for sustained investment in youth development and football infrastructure. He urged governments and the private sector to continue investing in football development to build on the continent’s recent progress and turn its World Cup ambitions into reality .
“We have also identified specific areas where there is room for improvement and I am confident that the coaches, technical teams and players will implement the necessary improvements,” Motsepe stated, announcing that CAF will host a conference involving national team coaches, technical staff, and former players to evaluate performances and prepare for the 2030 edition .
Furthermore, Motsepe emphasized the critical need for world-class facilities across the continent. “Every National Team and Football Club must play its matches in their country and in front of their local supporters and fans. It is essential that in each of our 54 Member Association Countries there is a stadium that is at the requisite CAF and FIFA level,” he added .
As the dust settles on the 2026 tournament, the message from Africa’s football leadership is clear: the continent has arrived on the global stage, and with strategic investment, a World Cup victory is no longer a distant dream, but an achievable goal.
