Read E-PaperHARARE — African music royalty took centre stage at Alexandra Sports Club on Saturday as Malian legend Salif Keita headlined the Ecobank Legends Night with a memorable performance.
At 77, the celebrated singer showed that age has done little to diminish his commanding voice or stage presence, entertaining a packed venue with a selection of songs spanning his remarkable career.
Dressed in his trademark flowing white outfit, Keita received a warm reception as he took the audience through some of his best-known works. Supported by a live band, the veteran performer blended traditional African sounds with Afro-pop and soulful melodies, keeping fans singing and dancing throughout his set.
His powerful vocals and energetic delivery drew loud cheers from the crowd, with the performance highlighting the enduring appeal of one of Africa’s most recognised musical figures.
Congolese rumba star Yondo Sister, 69, also delivered a lively performance, adding another dose of nostalgia and energy to the evening. The veteran singer kept the audience engaged with her distinctive rumba sound and vibrant stage presence.
Zimbabwe was represented by Afro-fusion group Intotal, who opened the way for the international acts with a spirited performance.
The group combined contemporary Afro-fusion elements with traditional Zimbabwean rhythms, earning a strong response from the home crowd.
For concertgoers, the event provided an opportunity to celebrate some of Africa’s established musical voices while also showcasing emerging and contemporary talent.
The Ecobank Legends Night brought together different generations of music fans, with Keita’s performance serving as one of the major highlights of the evening.
The veteran musician left the stage to a standing ovation, reaffirming his enduring connection with audiences decades after he first rose to international prominence.
