Finance Secretary George Guvamatanga said the audit had exposed alleged irregularities in the programme, particularly in urban schools, where some beneficiaries do not meet the intended criteria for assistance.

He made the remarks during an online media briefing on the ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.

“The audit has shown that many beneficiaries, especially in urban schools, are children of headmasters, teachers and prominent politicians, while the intended vulnerable children are excluded,” Guvamatanga said.

He said the Government would introduce corrective measures to address the findings and ensure that BEAM support reaches learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.

BEAM is a Government programme designed to assist vulnerable children with their education costs, helping them access and remain in school.

The Zimbabwean delegation attending the meetings in Bangkok includes Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube, Guvamatanga and other Government officials.
